Juggling with Julia

Family tested, mom approved recipes

I Ate NYC! (My Wallet May Be Empty, But My Heart is Full)

It’s Sunday a.m. and the whole family is snoring away, still recovering from our whirlwind trip to NYC. Not me. I seem to be genetically predisposed to rising early no matter what exhausting activities might have taken place the day before. Thanks to the blogging app on my phone, I can write this without even getting out of bed, which is clutch since Zena (my cat) hasn’t left my side since we returned home last night. Siamese cats can give quite the scolding, and, Lordy, did I get an earful last night!

We spent 46 fantastic hours in the city that never sleeps. We walked for miles, and marveled at the sites some of us had only seen in movies. We explored Times Square…

…Rockefeller Center…

and goofed around at Ripley’s Believe Or Not Odditorium…

We rode the huge ferris wheel that’s inside the Toys R Us…

…played the giant piano at FAO Schwarz…

and visited “Rexy” at the American Museum of Natural History…

We even managed to get over to Central Park to walk, play frisbee, and climb…

We also ate every meal out. Yes, that’s 6 meals in 2 days, which blows our dining-out budget for the year completely to kingdom come. There were yummy fish tacos from PJ Bricks, chocolate chip pancakes at the Galaxy Diner, a grilled reuben AND singing waitstaff at Ellen’s Stardust Diner (my fave hour of the trip!), lunch at the eco-friendly Shake Shack (the best burger I’ve ever had), and a couple of other delish ways to spend more $$ than we thought possible to feed a family of 5. We regularly handed over $60+ after each meal, despite the fact that we typically split 3 entrees between the five of us. Yikes!!

Ashley Taylor, our very talented and soon-to-be-famous waitress, singing "Proud Mary"

Despite the truly astonishing cost of everything in the city, we had a fantastic time. We laughed, ooh’d and aah’d a lot, stayed up late, slept in, and soaked up as much of NYC as we could in just short of two days.  None of us could have imagined adding one more thing to our itinerary, though there are so many things we could have done that just didn’t make the cut — Ground Zero, a Broadway show, the Empire State Building, and Lady Liberty top the list.  But, I’m not sure Mark and I can justify another trip back there with the kids anytime soon, when their absolute favorite part of the trip was the heated pool at the hotel 🙂
